On February 26th will be one month with Scotch at our house. We are all adjusted to his presence and he has brought a more joyful environment to our family. He is very much entertained and a loved puppy dog.
Scotch is making great improvements in his obedience training class. He is learning SIT, ATTENTION, DOWN, BACK, COME, and STAY. His energy is becoming more balanced with his new skills. Scotch wears a gentle leader~ he is not a fan of this. He attempts to
remove it but I keep him focused on the task at hand. He also becomes resistant to obeying his commands when wearing the gentle leader. He has been coined as a perpetual teenager constantly pushing the line. Staying calm helps him focus on what he really wants~ the removal of the gentle leader.
Scotch is also making impressive improvements in his socialization class. He has had one class so far and he made great stride. Scotch spent the first part of an hour in a room with simulated walls between the dogs but could not see them, only hear them. Eventually, with great ressistant to obeying commands, he succeeded to become focused on me. This resistant still took place after having two walks and fetching for a total of an hour and half before class. The second half of the hour Scotch learned to be around other dogs without simulated walls. He was curious of who they are but did not look at them for more than 1 second with food as the distraction.
When Scotch spent his second night at our house he started to resist the crate he slept in at night. After several weeks of struggle I moved the crate to a location where he could roam free in a closed room. This brought on more whining. I advised a trainer and she suggested putting the crate in a room where he can see humans and encourage him to go into the crate with a special crate treat. Two nights later Scotch no longer resists the crate and he willing enters the crate on his own at bedtime. Those must be really great treats!!
